# Automatically fill

## Let Teamlead fill employees' empty working time with skills, based on the staffing template, the profiles and the priority of skills.

With **Automatically fill**, Teamlead fills your employees' remaining empty working times with skills. Existing shifts and your own edits stay in place; Teamlead only adds to them.

### How to do it

1. Choose **Automatically fill** in the actions menu (three dots). If you work with shift templates, do this in the shift template. If you schedule continuously, do it on the **Schedule** page.
2. Choose when:
     - in a shift template: under **Days:**, tick the days from the pattern;
     - on the schedule page: choose the period in **From** and **to**. By default this is today until a week from now.
3. In **Employees:**, choose who you want to schedule. By default, these are all employable employees, excluding external employees. Untick, for example, employees on long-term sick leave or administrators.
4. In **Skills:**, choose which skills Teamlead may schedule. Untick projects or training, for example.
5. Click **Fill**. You see the progress.
6. Review the result and click **Apply**, or **Previous** to go back.
7. Click **Save**.

### What Teamlead takes into account

- The employee's working days, working times and availability, and the location's opening hours.
- Only skills that are on the employee's profile.
- Work locations: a skill that can only be done at the office is only given to people who work at the office that day.
- **Contract hours**: Teamlead does not schedule more hours than this. Leave and illness count.
- Breaks according to the break settings.
- The **Priority for generating shift templates** of each skill: **Critical** goes first, **Very low** last.
- Flexible tasks come after the fixed staffing (see [Flexible tasks](https://kennisbank.teamlead.io/en/flexible-tasks?hsLang=en)).

### Good to know

- The staffing template is a guideline, not a hard limit. Teamlead tries to solve shortages and avoid too many people on one skill. But Teamlead does fill all available working time of every employee. Deliberately leaving someone without a skill is not possible.
- Teamlead only schedules the skills you tick, even if that puts too many people on those skills.
- Place fixed moments, such as a daily kick-off or meeting, by hand first. Then fill automatically.
- Short skills at an exact time do not always work. For work without a fixed time, use a flexible task (see [Flexible tasks](https://kennisbank.teamlead.io/en/flexible-tasks?hsLang=en)).
- The order in which Teamlead schedules employees is random.
- Teamlead sets up rules such as "whole day", "fixed shift" or "skills exclude each other" for you; you do not see them in the app. Want a rule set up or changed? Email support@teamlead.io.
- For a new shift template you can also generate it directly with **Generate automatically** (see [Creating and publishing a shift template](https://kennisbank.teamlead.io/en/creating-and-publishing-a-shift-template?hsLang=en)).

### Not working?

- Do you see a message that the connection has not been fully set up yet? Then Teamlead is still fetching the call history of the queues. This can take up to a day. Try again afterwards.
- Is Teamlead scheduling differently from what you expect? See [Automatically fill schedules differently from the staffing template](https://kennisbank.teamlead.io/en/automatically-fill-schedules-differently-from-the-staffing-template?hsLang=en).
